Heating: Does Temperature Affect Harmonic Balancers?

Every engine has a target operating temperature for which it is designed, but that number doesn’t always match up with other components around it. The harmonic balancer should start working as soon as the engine is started, but is its performance limited by its temperature range?
In this video Nick Orefice of Fluidampr discusses the operating temperature range of harmonic balancers.
Harmonic balancers are used in the engine to ensure that all torsional vibrations from rotating components are damped… basically, they prevent the engine from shaking. These vibrations start as soon as the engine starts running, so the harmonic balancer should work well at any temperature. This means that no matter if the weather is hot or cold, the harmonic balancer should work properly.
Does the principle of operation of the harmonic balancer change when the engine starts to warm up to ideal operating temperature? Does the ambient temperature affect its performance? In the video, Orefice looks at both issues and explains that neither of them should affect the operation of the harmonic balancer. The harmonic balancer will only draw a certain amount of heat and power from the motor, so you don’t have to worry about it overheating. Fluidamp is filled with silicone oil and does not react negatively to temperature changes, so it can work in extreme conditions.
